    Have you ever had trouble starting something or maybe struggled to finish something that you have started? You’re not alone. All of us at one time or another experienced this. Not being able to concentrate on a specific goal or task at hand or even figuring out the correct course of action to take.

    So, how do you know if you have a problem focusing? If you have tasks or projects that you have not finished or lost interest in or simply did not follow through on, you have a lack of focus.

    A repetition of these experiences can often make you feel like a failure because you just don’t seem to be able to accomplish anything meaningful. However, this is not the truth.

    If you learn to focus properly, you have the ability to become successful at anything you do. It is a skill you can learn.

    Why is focus so important?

    Focus helps you to do the following:

    1) Set Clear Objectives
    2) Take Action
    3) Identify Specific & Productive steps to take
    4) Keep Track of your progress
    5) Avoid Distractions
    6) Work Efficiently.

    There are 2 types of focus what I call Big Picture (broad) Focus and Action Steps (narrow) Focus.

    Big Picture (broad) Focus is seeing the big picture. Looking at the vision, dream, goal or project from a distance allows you to gain a clearer idea of what you want to achieve and the best way to make it happen.

    Ask yourself the following:

    1) What do I want to accomplish?
    2) Why do I want to accomplish it?
    3) What will such a vision/ dream/ goal /project do for me or allow me to do?
    4) Is it challenging enough to be worth the effort?
    5) Is it realistic & achievable?
    6) What possible obstacles might I face as I pursue this vision/ dream/ goal /project?
    7) What types of challenges might threaten my focus & what can I do about them?
    8) What steps can I take to ensure I stay motivated?

    Action Steps (narrow) Focus means taking one thing at a time. Once you are clear on your big picture and assessed the challenges, possibilities and threats, it’s time to narrow your focus on the steps you need to take to bring your vision, dream, goal or project to fruition. Take one step at a time and only focus on what needs to be done.

    So, it is crucial that you have a clear and detailed plan of action.

    However, you can have the best vision and plan, but without taking actual action nothing will come to fruition. This is the reason why I call narrow focus, Action Steps Focus, because you need to take action and execute every step of your plan.

    What you focus on, you create in your life. So, it is critical that you focus on things that are worthwhile and will improve your life.

    The 10 keys to creating focus in your life are the following:

    1) Your commitment to your vision and the process (the action steps) which is essential to create the necessary focus and motivation to keep you going.

    2) Set achievable, measurable and realistic goals or steps. As you achieve your action steps, it will inspire you to move towards the next step.

    3) Stay focused on the positive and pay attention to the benefits and gains you achieve along the way with each action step.

    4) Keep improving your focus by working at it every day.

    5) Without enthusiasm you might not find the journey interesting enough to continue. When you first set your goal or vision, enthusiasm gives you the zest or “oomph” to tackle things head on. As time progresses, it is natural to lose some of the “oomph”. However, if you learn how to keep yourself enthused and recommit regularly to your goal or vision, you will be adding fuel to carry on. Positive Self-Talk also helps you to stay in the “oomph” mode. So, get excited about what you are doing and working towards.

    6) The saying “Your attitude determines your altitude” means that with a positive attitude nothing will ever seem hopeless or a waste of time or even too big a challenge. If you do encounter a setback, you will get right back up and move on.

    7) Focus takes tremendous self-discipline. You have to be strong enough to stick to your plan, track your progress, be objective to change it if necessary and execute it daily. You have to be dedicated to avoid temptations and self-doubt, negative thoughts but still be flexible if the unexpected happens.

    8) Avoid Procrastination. Procrastination is like a thief stealing your results. If you tend to over think things before doing; stop. You’re doing yourself no favors and you will set yourself up for failure.

    9) Be consistent. Consistency is absolutely crucial to your focus. Spending 30 minutes (or an hour per day) on your action steps, brings your vision closer every day. 30 min or an hour every day seems insignificant but in a 5-day period equates to 150 min or 5 hours spent focused towards your vision.

    Example:
    It’s like exercising for 20 min per day or brushing your teeth for 3 min per day. Done consistently every day calculates to 140 min exercise in a week and 21 min brushing your teeth. If you do it daily, it is not much of an effort and you get the benefit of improving your fitness level every day & having fresh breath. However, if you exercise once a week for 140 min or brush your teeth only once a week for 21 min, you will certainly not get fit and your teeth will be full of plaque and your breath will not smell great!

    10) Tenacity is perfectly explained in the saying “Quitters never win and winners never quit!”. Creating and keeping a strong focus is hard work but is a skill that will serve you for the rest of your life. Believe in yourself and your ability to succeed at whatever you do.

    Therefore it is extremely important what you decide to focus on and work towards. So, if your vision, dream, goal or project is very important to you and you keep the 10 keys to create focus in mind, you will achieve success.

Production includes your; factories, warehouses, patents, other intellectual property, the product itself, equipment, computers & software, automation. Essentially anything that’s required for you to produce your product falls into this first category.

    2. Distribution
    This is your ability to get your product into the hands of your customers. If your an offline, product-based business, this may be, a number of delivery trucks you have & how effectively they deliver your products. Or if you’re the e-commerce giant, Amazon. How many hi-tech delivery drones do you have flying around, in the sky, delivering products to customers (something they are still developing btw)

    Now, if you’re an online business, you may be thinking to yourself, ‘John, I don’t need distribution, I have the beautiful thing that people call the internet. This doesn’t apply to me.’ Think about this for a moment..

    What if all your web pages, online sales processes & servers crashed for 10 long hours. How many sales will you make during that time? And many people would be able to access your product/service? Those 10 hours probably won’t be as ”financially lucrative” as your business usually is, huh?

    Your servers, web pages & online systems are your DISTRIBUTION.

    They are the tools that allow you to distribute your products/services to your customers. I don’t want to bang on about this, but once again, EVERY one of these 6 LIMITING FACTORS applies to EVERY business out there.

    Next one..

    3. Team
    This includes; yourself as the business owner, your employees, your suppliers, your business partners, your affiliates, your board of directors, your mentors & advisers, etc. They all fall into this 3rd category, Team. In a moment I’ll talk about how these 6 factors apply to you & your business, but before I go into that, let me cover the other 3 factors.

    4. Finance
    This is your access to capital. The finances you need to run & expand your business. If you don’t have the running capital to run your business, your business will be limited in it’s current & future success. Finance – that’s the 4th factor.

    5. Marketing
    Your ability to actually communicate your business – and your products/services – to your customers & potential customers. How do you communicate the value that you bring – your products & services – to your customers? And through which channels do you communicate your message to customers?

    How are you getting people to pay attention to you, your business, your products, your services & your brand? That all falls under marketing.

    And the last one..

    6. Demand
    Is there an actual demand for your products & services? Are you in an industry, offering products, that are financially lucrative? If you’re in the floppy disk business, your demand is probably very low compared to a decade or two ago. That’s going to limit your business, unless you find a way to take into greater customer demand.

    Those are the 6 limiting factors..

    1. Production
    2. Distribution
    3. Team
    4. Finance
    5. Marketing
    6. Demand

    Now, here’s the really important part. So pay attention to this.

    The size of a business is directly proportional to the lowest of those 6 limiting factors. Let me repeat that..The size & success of a business is equal to the lowest of the 6 limiting factors.

    Not the highest of the 6. But the lowest. Think about it for a moment.

    If a business has great production facilities, expansive distribution, an incredible team, plenty of financing available, world-class marketing but has NO DEMAND.

    Meaning, nobody actually wants the products that the business offers. How successful will that business be?
    Not very successful. (unless, again, it finds a way to tap into greater demand)

    What about if a business has plenty of demand (everybody wants the product), top class marketing, a great team behind the company, plenty of financing, expansive distribution – but NO PRODUCTION.

    Meaning, the business doesn’t have the ability to produce the product it wants to sell. How successful will that business be? Probably not very successful.

    (unless, again, it finds a way to solve the production issues in the business)

    The size of your business is equivalent to the lowest of the 6 factors. Hence, our goal is to build up the 6 factors of our business in equilibrium.

    If you have $10 MILLION/year worth of products being produced, but you only have $1 MILLION/year worth of demand – you have a problem.

    Equally, if you are generating $15 MILLION/year worth of new customers through your marketing,
    yet your only producing $3 MILLION/year worth of products, you’re you losing out on a lot of potential revenue.

    It’s about growing the 6 limiting factors in equilibrium. With that said, it takes different skills to develop each of the 6 factors. There are particular skills you must develop to expand that factor of your business, and therefore expand your business.

    For TEAM, we must develop our leadership, communication & teamwork skills.
    For MARKETING, we must develop our skills of influence, market research & persuasion.

    Life Purpose.

    Once you find it, it’s a magical thing. New levels of passion, success & fulfilment all stem out of higher levels of purpose in our lives. Equally, without it – without purpose in our lives – our life can often feel like you’re wandering through a confusing maze, unsure of the right way to go, or right things to do. So, how do you find it? That’s a question my students ask me all the time.

    ”How do I find my purpose?”

    And my answer comes from an early mentor of mine, Brian Tracy. He explained this, something he titled, ‘’The Corridor Principle’’..

    Imagine you’re walking down a corridor. And along that corridor, you see many doors left & right. Many possibilities… many rooms (opportunities) that you can step into. A lot of people just walk down the corridor – move along the path of life – without ever really walking into any of the rooms.

    They ignore the rooms & just walk straight ahead. Or worse, they do not move at all and stay stuck. What they don’t realise is that these rooms are the opportunities for greater passion & purpose in their lives.

    One room might represent arts & crafts. Think Picasso. Van Gogh. Michelangelo. That was their life purpose.
    Another room might represent science & innovation. Think Einstein. Nikola Tesla. Bill Gates. Ada Lovelace. Charles Darwin.
    Another room representing… finance. Another… basketball. Another… music.

    There are so many different ‘’purposes’’ and things we can go out and pursue in our lives, however the key is to find what we are passionate about and what gives us purpose in our lives. What might make one person wake up super excited every morning, might make another want to stab themselves in the eye with a fork.  We must figure out what works for us.

A new area of study. And maybe this becomes something that you completely fall in love with and want to do for the rest of your life, ‘’your purpose’’..

    Like Warren Buffett and investing. Roger Federer and tennis. George Lucas and making movies.

    However, often, the first thing you test will NOT be the thing that you want to do for the rest of your life. So, what do you do?

    You walk out of that room. Close that door. Then, you keep walking down the corridor. And instead of whining & complaining that the first opportunity – the first door – didn’t work out, you let that go, and move onto something new.

    You walk into the next door. A new possibility. A new event. Something new. Maybe this is your thing. Maybe it’s not. Either way, you’re testing. You’re figuring it out. And that right there is the key. So, what do you do?

    Again, you walk out, keep walking down the corridor & enter the next door. And you keep testing new doors – new opportunity, areas of study, passions, hobbies, etc – until you finally land on the one that you become near-obsessed with. Something that you love so deeply. That doesn’t feel like work. That feels like play. Something that when you do, time feels to fly by.

    That thing. Your passion.

    Test what works for you. Walk down the corridor & be willing to open many doors until you find the room that you want to stay in. Once you find ”your room” (your passion), you stay in that room and do that. Because you love ”that” so much. The principle symbolises the journey of life each one of us goes on during our lifetime. Until you find the door that is right for you, you keep opening more doors.

    Allowing yourself to experience more.. Doing more will rapidly speed up you finding your passion. Being open to more opportunities. And you go through many different activities until you find something that you can’t see yourself ever NOT doing. Something that you are so damn passionate about. Something you think about all the time. That you love. That drives you. That inspires you. Equally, don’t fall into the trap that many people fall into..

    The trap of ”getting stuck”..

    Many people go to university to study a particular topic, quickly realise this isn’t what they want to spend their life doing, but they stay stuck justifying that ‘I’ve already spent so many hours on this’ or ‘I can’t quit now..’ And they spend the next 10, 20, 30 years miserable… doing something that they have no passion for.

    Remember, there are always other options… other doors to step into.

    Any moment you can decide to leave the room you have unconsciously trapped yourself in & enter a new door. The right door for you.
